Abuse, abuse and more abuse – 24 hours on a Premier League Twitter account

The replies to Aston Villa are hilarious

Conan Doherty

Football fans are very angry.

Football fans on Twitter are clinically unwell, by and large.

There’s no balanced thinking anymore – not on the internet anyway. You’re so far on one side that you can’t see the other and you’re violently aggressive until someone listens to you.

Anger has replaced support. Anger is how you show your support now.

And, it doesn’t matter who you are or how you’re doing, assume your fans on social media are not happy. Especially if you’re Manchester United. But especially if you’re Villa.

We took a look at the random midweek posts from every Premier League club in the last 24 hours and the results were exactly as we expected: mass outrage.

Leicester City

Top of the league, miracle season, the whole world rooting for them – even Arsenal fans at this stage (if they remember what rooting feels like).

So a normal, positive post, you’d think, would go down well. Or at least unnoticed. It’s an interview with Marc Albrighton about a 1-0 win for God’s sake.

It got noticed*.

Tottenham Hotspur

Having an unbelievable season. Not only are they headed straight for the Champions League – which would’ve been quite the achievement anyway – but they’re still battling for the league title.

Who wouldn’t want a clip of their heroic manager training with the lads at such a great time for the club?

There’s no pleasing some people.

Arsenal

Just a round-up of what the media are saying all in one handy place.

But the only thing worse than clickbait for Arsenal fans is false hope.

Manchester City

The most social media savvy of them all. Man City love to give their fans little treats, just for the craic.

The fans don’t appreciate it.

Manchester United

Ah, look, a mid-week poll. And some free goals for the fans to enjoy from the glory days.

But as long as Louis van Gaal is still there…

West Ham United

The Hammers – the Champions League chasing Hammers – are providing some super behind-the-scenes footage from the training ground.

It’s an acquired taste though.

Southampton

Memory lane.

It’s a bit soon for the ‘L’ word.

Stoke City

It’s been a stunning season for Stoke.

But when your stadium has three corners that are not filled in, you’re just asking for trouble trying to talk about anything else.

Stoke

We thought the gaps were to encourage the wind at the Britannia.

Liverpool

Some classy exchanges between two classy clubs.

Hand me the bucket.

Look how engaging Liverpool are with the public too.

Perhaps too engaging. Aside from the erotic requests, Emre Can has to deal with these questions being put to him.

No pressure either…

Chelsea

Amazing gesture.

Give someone an inch…

West Bromwich Albion

Injured player generating a bit of debate with an interesting feature.

Nothing is interesting anymore.

Everton

Professional footballers raising a lot of money in a fun way.

Oh, f**k off.

AFC Bournemouth

Wait… what?

Watford

Watford are going to Wembley.

But not in their numbers.

Swansea City

A nice memory.

Still hurts.

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace are going to Wembley.

But not for free.

Norwich City

Norwich are voting for their player of the season.

There are some big omissions though.

Sunderland

The season card deadline is here.

The season card deadline is pushed back.

Newcastle United

There’s a youngster playing well out on loan.

Over it.

NUFC

Aston Villa

It’s not a good time to work in communications at Aston Villa. Anything – absolutely anything – you put up is just bait for dynamite.

Nice work for charity only attracts vicious insults.

Even injury updates aren’t welcome.

https://twitter.com/BenA1_/status/717685243826868224

Rising youngster interviews are not a good idea.

Captain’s return.

New crest.

And that’s just in the last 24 hours.
